Founded in 1938, the organization works to enhance the welfare of tennis media workers on issues ranging from the rights of the press to expanding the profession by increasing tennis coverage by the media, and creating opportunities for future writers.

WHO BELONGS TO THE USTWA? View current members
Those whose livelihood involves the coverage of tennis or related communications work. To qualify for membership, candidates must work regularly and be paid for their work. There are three types of members:

  • Regular Members work in an editorial capacity.
  • Associate Members work in ancillary positions (PR, marketing, tournament staff, etc.).
  • Honorary Members, chosen by the Officers, have distinguished themselves by exhibiting extraordinary support of the USTWA and the sport throughout their careers.

Meet The Board  
Art Spander
Art Spander began his career as a news writer for United Press International in 1960 and moved to sportswriting for the Santa Monica Outlook in 1963. He went to work for the San Francisco Chronicle in 1965 and was named the lead columnist for the San Francisco Examiner in 1979. Spander was awarded the McCann Award in 1999, earning him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His golf coverage earned him the Masters Major Achievement Award in 2007, the PGA of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. This year, he won the UCLA Award for Professional Achievement in journalism and the Tournament Golf Journalism Award.

Robin Bateman
Robin Bateman is the facilities manager of two sites --John Drew Smith & Tattnall Tennis Centers -36 courts in Macon, Ga., where she coordinates tennis programs and leagues, is a tournament director, serves as a team captain, and assists junior teams competing at district, regional, and section events. Bateman is a contributing editor for Racquet Sports Industry Magazine, the communications director for TennisConnect, and an author and moderator for Eriting.Com/ which is a site for Writers.  She covers local tennis for The (Macon) Telegraph and freelances for Recreation and Parks in Georgia,  Livestrong.com, eHow.com and TennisLife.com.

Bateman volunteers for the national USTA Tennis in Public Parks Committee, and USTA Georgia's Diversity Committee.  She serves on the board for her local CTA.  

Bateman has received the USTA Georgia Media Excellence Award and USTA Southern Section Media Excellence Award.

Cindy Cantrell

Cindy Cantrell has been a vice president of the USTWA since 2008. She is a columnist for The Boston Globe and has contributed to TennisLife Magazine, Racquet Sports Industry, Tennis, USTA Magazine, North Shore Golf & Tennis and numerous newspapers in the Greater Boston area.

Tom (Richards) Koisinski

Tom has always been a tennis fan and player. After playing at the high school and college level, Richards began a decade long stint as a high school and college tennis coach in New Jersey, ending his time at Ocean County College as Head Men's and Women's Tennis coach and Interim Athletic Director. Richards has also been a member of the USTA and USRSA, as well as a consultant for several racquet manufacturers and for Speedminton, USA.

Richards began his journalism career as a beat reporter for the Coastal Leader-Review in Ocean County, NJ, and soon became the lead tennis writer for Sports Central, the first on-line sports commentary web site. Richards is currently the Senior Tennis Columnist and a frequent contributor to several on-line publications.

Richards is a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore and resides in Point Pleasant, NJ.

 
Jim Martz
Jim Martz is the founder, publisher and editor of Florida Tennis Magazine, which has served as the Voice of Tennis in Florida since 1992 and is a winner of the USTA's national Media Excellence Award. Previously Martz was a sports writer and columnist with the Miami Herald for 22 years, and before that he was at the Des Moines Register sports department for nearly three years. Martz has written four books on University of Miami football and one on UM baseball, and edited the book "50 Love, Advantage Florida," a history of the USTA Florida division. Since 1992 Matz also has been editor of Canesport Magazine. He is a native of South Bend, Ind., received a B.A. at Alma College in Michigan and an M.A. at the University of Iowa.
Ann LoPrinzi
Ann LoPrinzi has been a USTWA board member since 2007.  She is the 2010/2011 Treasurer and Membership Committee Chair.  LoPrinzi has been the major tennis writer in The Times of Trenton since 1989. Her weekly Sunday tennis column has become the place to go for area tennis information. Although she covers some pro events, her major focus has always been to promote area tennis by reporting on events and featuring interesting tennis personalities and happenings. In her 21 years, LoPrinzi has been inducted into the Mercer County Tennis Hall of Fame, received the USTA Middle States Media Award two times, and was the recipient of the USTA MS New Jersey District Media Award four times. In 2010, she was the female honoree of the Trenton Select Committee for her contributions to area sports. 

 

LoPrinzi is also the beat tennis writer for boys and girls high school tennis, covering dual matches and county and state tournaments, as well as a weekly spotlight story. She has written non-tennis features for The Times as well - one on an autistic family, another on a amputee on skis, and a third on a couple who raised five amazing children on a very limited income.

LoPrinzi also has been active in her local tennis community.  She has chaired the Mercer County Tennis Hall of Fame three times, has served on USTA Middle States committees, served on numerous event committees, is director of the Mercer County Tennis Council, and was on the boards of the NJTL of Trenton and the USTA MS NJD.
