The Bud Collins U.S. Open Media Tournament presented by the United States Tennis Writers’ Association
The USTWA brought back the U.S. Open Media Tournament on the final Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, after an absence of at least eight years. This was a popular media event, founded by Bud Collins (pictured below with Greg Couch), so it has been named in his honor.
Approximately 25 participants played despite the weather-related rescheduling, and a good time was had by all. The four top point-getters received watches from Citizens, a long-time U.S. Open sponsor. The winners were: Greg Couch, Kevin Lamarque, Alexander Erestov, and Emmanuel Wansi.
Thanks to the following parties for providing prizes:
- USTA (balls, water, 25 U.S. Open hats and the use of four courts)
- Citizen U.S.A. (four watches)
- New Chapter Press (eight copies of “The Bud Collins History of Tennis" and eight copies of "On This Day in Tennis History")
- Richard Kent (copies of "Inside the U.S. Open")
- Tennis Industry Association (20 bags and six hats)
- World TeamTennis (T-shirts)
The USTWA organized event and provided refreshments and trophies.
Special thanks to the tournament committee, which was comprised of Richard Kent, Ann LoPrinzi, Ed Goldman, and Chery Rice Jones. It was a real team effort, and there are already plans to continue the event next year.
